98 E300 Boost Adjustment?

Hey Guys,

I finally registered with the forum because I have a question that I have not found an answer to on already posted threads. I'd first like to say that its good to be here and I look forward to continue posting in the future, and help out whenever I can with other members.

Here goes-

I purchased a 1998 E300 TD about 4 months ago, and after a few initial problems (radiator leak and fuel pump seals) I have finally decided to tune it up. I just paid for the “custom” tuning from Oliver over at SpeedTuningUSA and would like to adjust the boost on the car to keep the smoke down and take advantage of the extra fuel.

So… how do I adjust the waste gate on the turbo to allow the turbo to spool faster and create more boost without blowing my intercooler tubes from over boost (as I’ve already done numerous times on my Cummins Dodge). I know with a fueling and timing box I should have a boost and EGT gauge, but Oliver has assured me that the power increase (50 hp and 95 Nm) is not too aggressive, and that my engine would not even require the boost adjustment, they just recommend it.

Looking forward to an answer, I’ll be sending in the ECM tomorrow!

Got The Box!

Well I got the new computer this weekend, and have already put about 500 miles on it (I have a heck of a commute to school!). So far I have been really happy... great power... transmission doesn't seem to have any issues (209k miles and counting)... and the car seems to idle a lot smoother and quieter. It really surprised me at first at how fast the rpm's rise from a stop between shifts.

The only questionable thing I have seen is that the temperature seems to run a little warmer. Usually is stays a hair lower than 80 degrees C, and now its noticeably above (I'd say about 87 to 89 degrees C, but I wear glasses, and the gauge is not linear). I think I remember reading about this anomaly from other posts.

Anyway, I'm ready to adjust the boost to keep my smoke levels down now, and am still waiting to hear if anyone has any input on how to do it. I figured I'd start monkeying with the waste gate this weekend or next, but since I don't have a boost gauge, I don't really know if I am going to do any good (other then just watching for the smoke level to drop).

I'm looking forward to any input... does anyone even know if I will trip a trouble code if I disconnect the waste gate? Is there such thing as an over boost code like on the Cummins'???

AFAIK, I have that same issue and it is normal

Aklim,

Do you have the custom SpeedTuningUSA program on your E300? Do you feel comfortable driving it without a boost adjustment?

I have the stronger version of it or so Oliver says.

No I don't. However, I am used to a vette that has 410 HP on a chasis dyno so that would be kinda poochy to me. I am always up for more power so that is a bad question. I have added headers and reprogrammed my Suburban, gears, headers, servos and a shift kit and planning a Radix supercharger next year. However, for practical purposes, I would have to say it is ok

You don't think that we are doing any damage to our engines by overfueling? I'm just a little worried that the EGT's might be getting a little high, or that the CAT may get clogged up with soot??? How many miles are on yours?

As for the vette... it sounds pretty good. I just sold my '99 convertible in August when I started school again, and boy do I miss it!

As for the gas suburban... why not a diesel?

I don't think it is that radical that we would be doing much damage to our engines. Many people have tried it and not really many of them saying there is an issue with it. When the cat gets plugged with soot, well, there is a solution to that too. 93000 on the clock.

I took the wrecked 91 Firebird and stuffed the engine and tranny into the Vette.

Why? Because I didn't find a diesel suburban. I didn't think they made one recently or did they? I thought the last one was in 95? If I were to get a diesel SUV it probably will have to be up to an 02 Ford Excursion with the 7.3 Powerstroke engine to tow my toy hauler.

Yeah, I'm not too concerned with dropping the CAT... maybe the muffler too while I'm under it. I've been thinking about an Excursion myself for a while. I just question the quality of Ford as I've had a lot of problems with Ford vehicles in the past.

Have you heard of anyone measuring the boost or EGT's on the E300's? I'm curious now as to what a smaller motor like these 6 cylinders are putting out.

DON'T BUY THE 6.0L POWERSTROKE. Get the 7.3 one. My father has a F350 and it was fine. No problems.,

No. Never heard anyone do that.

Maybe Gilly will know how to crank up the boost
