Likewise...I've gone through a few sets too. Expensive little things.

First was a set when I got the car (old ones were autolites)
Second set was a relay wiring fault I didn't realize on my long glow.
Third was my realizing my temp sensor I used on my long glow was bad and the long glow was on all the time

Yikes lots of money heh.

P.E.Haiges 11-20-2005 11:09 AM

Whunter,

Sounds like your GP are staying on too long after the engine is running. I would hook up a test light, with the bulb inside the car, connected to one of the GP and observe how long the GP remain on.

I concur with PEH.

No possibility of using four sets of glow plugs in two years unless something is amiss.

I'll put $5.00 down on the plugs remaining lit for the full 40 seconds on every start. ;)

It would be easier to simply put a volt meter on one of the GPs after the car starts and see if it's still energized, and for how long.

A test light is the easiest seen from the drivers seat :)

I just installed the modern duraterm Bosch plugs and a new afterglow relay in our 300D, the difference is incredible. INSTANT start. Smooooth idle instantly. The car had the ORIGINAL Beru "W Germany" ;) glowplugs in it. And a couple still worked! The relay was shot, it'd only stay on about 10 seconds before clicking off again. So now all is well with the 300D's glow system. Plugs came out easy, amazing considering they'd been in there 24 years!

Mcturbo 11-25-2007 04:03 PM

Just got a new set of GP's from Kragen(Autolite) after pulling my old ones which were pencil-type. Tried testing each one individually on the pos terminal, not one got even warm... Then tried same on different car that has brand new battery, same thing...
Then tried the new ones to see if they would glow ----NOTHING!!!! Not even warm.
Any help/suggestion? I don't want to put in the new ones unless I can get them to glow hot.

Sbean 11-25-2007 05:17 PM

Have you checked the plugs with an ohmmeter? If they test good (about 0.7 ohms) maybe your test procedure needs to be changed. Steve

P.E.Haiges 11-25-2007 05:35 PM

Mcturbo,

What positive terminal are U talking about? What did U connect the other part of the GP to?

Clamp a GP in a Vice Grip Pliers. Touch the terminal of the GP to one terminal of your battery and the end of the Vice Grip to the other terminal of the battery.

I'm betting all the new GP will glow and most of the old ones will glow too.

I'm wondering why U got Autolight GP. They are not known for lasting very long. I think U should return the Autolight GP and get Bosch GP.

I am planning on doing that test with the 5 ORIGINAL glowplugs I just pulled from our 300D yesterday. I know at least a couple were dead, because it'd sputter on a few cylinders when started. Now its smooooth. They are Beru, with a MB star on them, made in West Germany. Amazing that they lasted that long and still started the car! (not easily however)

Sorry, it is impossible to remove the pre-chamber without removing the glow plug FIRST.

As you have been pounding it with the slide hammer extraction tool, there may be additional difficulty removing the glow plugs now.
