I'm going to tour some local pick-n-pull auto salvage yards in search of a 2.47 diff for my '84 SD. What tools are required/desired do this job?

You know...I just did that job, and me brains switched off
Guess I'm getting old.

Was a pain I remember trying to get enough room to swing the top mounting bolts.....besides draining the oil and pulling the C clips.

i have a diff for an 88 300e w124
can you use it...

You'll need: 14mm hex socket (drain plug), 10mm (or 8mm?) hex socket for the axle bolts. 15mm?, 17mm wrenches for the flex disc. 24mm socket for the subframe bolts, 19mm? socket for the two front diff mount nuts, 22mm? socket for the large rear mount bolt. breaker bar
hints:
loosen the drain plugs first.
remove the axles with the tires on the ground and the drive shaft connected, these bolts are tight (six per side) you will need to be able to lock down the wheel to loosen the bolts
The diff weights about 80 pounds, look out when it drops..

The tough part was trying to get the replacement diff to feed into the sub frame mount holes.

And I was doing it on a lift !

There's no need to drain and open the diffy unless you are leaving the axles behind.

And just how are you gonna get the retainer clips out ?

Getting a diff' out without doing this is like, doubling the weight !

I assume you would lay underneath, support the diff with your head, and grasp each axle like it's part of a barbell! I think that would be pretty tough though. I R&R'd the cast iron transfer case in my truck last year. It weighs 135 lbs. That took every ounce of my strength - I wouldn't try it again.
