Oil turns black after just a few miles

I have an 84 300SD with 175,000 miles on it. Runs very well and was maintained very well from previous owner. After I change the oil, it gets black within just a few hundred miles. Is this normal? I was thinking of installing a bypass filter to eliminate this.
