190db diesel timing chain installation

Hi
I am putting together a rebuilt om621 engine-- The timing chain needs to be installed and the fuel injection pump also

First I set the crank at 45 deg BTDC--first cylinder is now in compression

Second I align the marks on the injection pump at the coupling to the engine

Third I set the camshaft sprocket spacer mark to the mark on the first bearing housing to set the cam.

Now I can install the timing chain

Is this correct?

Thanks- all comments appreciated!!

Bump to top......

Does anyone have any help here? My 190Db has been out of service for over 40yrs, so I will not really be of any help. It is pretty cool, though, to see someone working on one of these Ponton engines. What year car is it from, Angus?

Keep bumping it. Perhaps posting in the vintage section? Not sure where is best to find this info...

Super cool though.

Kent Bergsma who speaks as the mercedes source, I believe runs a ponton. You might find documentation at that site.

I don't know from experience but I would have thought that all marks should be lined up before the chain is put on. Cam zeroed out, crank zeroed and injection pump zeroed out....? I'd think there are marks for all these.

Is this an overhead cam engine?

thanks for replying

Thanks-- its a 59 or 58 engine I bought on craigslist. I'm going to put it in my 60 sedan. Pretty much rebuilt but has sat around for 17 years!

Angus,

At some point it would be really great to see some pics of your 60 Ponton sedan. Also let us know how the chain job goes.
