The new starter in my 617 was a night and day difference. They both had the chance to run off of a brand new batter that was bought a week before the swap and it was amazing what a difference a new starter makes. To me, it was well worth the $96 I paid to have it installed.

I'm sure it's possible, but I wouldn't want to try. He was able to do the whole job in less than 1/2 hour, barely getting his hands dirty. I'm sure it would have taken me 4 times as long, and I would have risked messing up the bolt. Personally, I was glad to pay $50 in labor to avoid the hassle.

Yes, if you can get a mechanic to do a job for $50.00, it's certainly worth it. Around here, it would be $300 for such a job............$150 for the starter and $150 for the labor.:(

I don't really remember what he charged me for labor, but I don't think it was much more than half an hour at $90/hour. I think I had him do a few other little things at the same time, but it was a while ago.

I had the chance to hear a new starter on a 617 today, mine is for sure on its way out. It turns but it's just weak as can be.

Have fun changing it!:D

Whoever put the starter their was either an idiot or being fired.:silly:

"Heinz you are fired, design the starter on the 617, then pack up your stuff"

actually

since the starters last an average of ___________miles. i have had cars with over 250k on them with the original starters (as far as i know). what can you complain about? i bet most premature failures are from people grindng away when it obviously isnt going to start.

if you keep your car tuned you bout cant wear them out.

one of the reasons they are a pita to change is the extra brace on the front end. but of course that brace makes them last a lot longer as it prevents flex around the business end.

not picking on you. the po prob did it in.

It's always sounded in this manner. :(

That's one big plus about the 603 is the starter location, it's like BMWs old I6. Readily available to remove.

I do have some EGR less manifolds and a KKK turbo to install so the starter will probably be done at the same time as well as a blockheater.
