Diesel filters, no tank strainers please.
This is for Diesel filters, primary and secondary, no tank strainers please.
The attached pictures are fuel filters from a 1984 300D W123. No documentation of when they where last changed. NOTE: I have added a shock dose of Biobor to the fuel tank as a precaution.

Those cars must have been fueled with pure junky diesel!
I ran my prefilter over 1.5 years and took it off only to find it had not even a few flecks of stuff stuck in the screen, it had just gotten dirty on the outside! (I washed it off to find this out!)My new one (been in for 4-5 months so far) is still crystal clear after over 4.5k miles, nothing in the screen......buy at high-volume stations! Also, I've been using the same secondary filter for over 2 years, and I can still roar to 100+ mph no problem, fuel is a-flowin fine. I'll bet there's practically nothing in it....maybe I'll change it next summer just to see whats in it....

Was that gunk the result of biodiesel 'cleaning' out the fuel tank?

Whunter your pictures of this stuff always amaze me. Tell me something. Is this stuff gritty to the touch or is it slimy?
I have never seen it close up. I can't believe the poor fuel some people are getting. My plastic filter is still clear after 10k miles. My diesel tractors sometimes go for five summers on their filters.

Try the StarTron Diesel additive.
My filters were constantly getting gooped up, and since I put in the St DA. 1 month ago all filters are clear and dramatically different. No power loss or hestation since. It is available at West Marine or other marine supply stores! AA

Crap From Bottom of Tank?
WOW, that looks bad. Looks like you got some of the crap from the bottom of the tank in the gas station. Many years ago, I was able to look inside a leaking diesel tank dug up from a gas station. I was amazed at the crap inside. This is why I go to fill up in stations that have recently replaced tanks, or those with high volumes like those near highways.

Five years
Five years with only oil change maintenance, nothing else.
Filling the tank at the worst possible low volume ghetto stations. |

Yep, looks like it was dirtier than I thought earlier!
My performance degrading just began to happen recently though.....so it did make it about 20k before needing to be replaced.....

Main filter with about 30-34k on the clock.
Changed it simply because I was tracking down a fuel system restriction...still looking for it...think it is the device that limits air to/fro the fuel tank vent ![]() This filter has had WVO, biodiesel, and regular petroleum diesel ran through it... ...the goo looking stuff is the glue they use inside the filter. BTW Yes I do have the right socket (shallow and such) and whatnot to properly remove the tank strainer
