Bump

Whunter (Roy...) I got you beat on the primary filter. Mine was an original paper-filter bosch unit, COMPLETELY plugged with algae - as if you couldnt tell it was a clear plastic filter (it looked opaque dark green when I took it off)

The attached pictures are fuel filters from a 1984 300D W123.

No documentation of when they where last changed.

NOTE: I have added a shock dose of Biobor to the fuel tank as a precaution.
I have run high performance diesel engines for a lot of years my last was a creation of diesel Inj.of Pittsburgh PA.the black granules look like carbon that builds around the injector nozzles.though I am not sure how this system works, could you be getting blow back from the spray nozzles into the return fuel to the tank and then back into the feed? j-n-t

Exclamation ...Wow, never though of that!

I'll be darned... Never thought of a need for a filter in the return line!

there is no restriction or screen at all in the return line. All kinds of crud can get into the tank from the fuel system itself.

Hmmmmm.

Here's one from my truck, notice that the bottom of the filter is OPEN and it is still holding fuel. The element itself has been sucked in and collapsed, and there was another filter up-stream that was clogged as well, causing restriction up stream and causing this filter body to collapse a bit on the top.

Those MBZ lift pumps mean BUSINESS.

I dont have any pics, but mine had sat for a while with diesel in the tank and I had black chunks in the pre filter that I could see. I ran the Startron diesel tank cleaner first and after a couple tanks and 3 or 4 prefilters, my filter is now clean. I didnt clean the strainer, as the startron is supposed to dissolve algae into small enough particles to then be burned with the fuel. I now add Startron diesel additve with each tank. All is well.....

X2, probably had mushrooms growing in the tank.

Wonder if it sat with a 1/2 full tank for a few years.
The Biobor would have been a necessity not a precaution !!

If you use a plastic pre filter that you can see through with the light BEHIND the filter, then it is easy check the filter. The prefilter on my 603 is easy to see inside and it can go 50,000 to 75,000 miles before I see any dirt build up because the fuel is so clear. The main filter starts to clog between 20,000 to 25,000 miles. I use only Shell diesel at a high volume station and it's only when I go on long trips using different brands of fuel that I pick up trash quickly in the pre filter. This has been the case for the 27+ years that I've owned the SDL (bought new). I use the semi-clear pre filter with the brass inserts in the ends ( Febi? ). It's has a slightly larger filter surface than some other filters.I use a Mahl main filter. I cannot see how a main filter can last much over 30,000 miles as I have never been able to go much over 25,000 miles before the main starts to clog. That said, I always travel with 3 main and 3 pre filters in the trunk with a funnel and I fill a new main filter with clean diesel fuel suppliment.

FYI...

the black gunk in tanks is NOT "fungi" or "bugs" or "mushrooms" or any type of organic life...
it's asphalt. residue from the diesel either naturally breaking down, or from bacteria consuming a portion of the diesel, leaving the asphalt in the tank...

a GOOD tank cleaner like startron, or CLEAR Diesel from power service will reconstitute the asphalt back into the fuel, and let you burn it.

Yes, the black granular stuff is what drops out when diesel fuel ages. Those of us with old diesel boats are quite familiar with it. It is commonly called asphalteens. Some folks have cut open their tanks and scooped it out.

I understand that an extract from asphalt was added to the low sulfur diesel, and it would drop out as the fuel aged. I don't know if this is still done with the ultra low sulfur diesel we now have to use in the US. Maybe not as asphalt has a fair amount of sulfur in it. A good fuel polishing system is often used to get the particles out of the fuel when it is stirred up in heavy seas. Startron is helpful as it seems to redissolve the black solids, but it does plug filters faster for awhile.

The engine had just been swapped in, so don't know what the old prefilter was like, I would imagine pretty bad though. I'm glad I changed it sooner rather than later!
