Rattly whirring noise from engine—fan clutch?

Whenever the car changes attitude suddenly (speed up/slow down in parking lot, sharp turn, going over a speed bump) I hear a pronounced whirring noise, kind of a RRRRRRNH like the sound of the engine revving. It corresponds with hitting the bottom of a dip or clunking over a speed bump most of all.
I suspect the fan or fan clutch because I hear a quieter version of the sound the whole time the engine's on. It's like the fan is off balance or something.

How can I test/verify this? Also, I've read something about refillig the fan clutch with fluid of the appropriate viscosity, is that possible? I really can't afford a new fan clutch right now, especially in light of other things Ilse needs.

The bump thing makes me think that possibly your engine mounts are collapsed and the engine is sitting low, possibly hitting the belt or pulley on something, or the fan touching the shroud.

My engine mounts are definitely toast (or at least very well-done bread), she shakes like a wet puppy on shutdown. I looked for radiator damage or signs of anything scraping, but I couldn't find any.
It's not a sharp increase in sound, it has some duration, like rrrrRRRRNNnnnh. Makes sense to me with bad motor mounts, like the torque of the fan is resisting motion 90° out of phase due to rotational momentum.

What's the diagnostic test for a bad fan clutch?

remove it, look for wear on the ramp/bearing and replace if the balls are missing the cage, or if there are any balls missing

Sorry, mixed up the tabs for the thread here and the one on the forum with "world" in the name.

I meant to ask about checking the fan clutch, but the info on the vac pump is good too. Bad vac pump was suggested on BW, so I definitely need to check that too. Don't need any grenades under the hood, thankyouverymuch.

The vac pump wouldn't be affected by bumps.

Closer inspection reveals two separate symptoms/problems:
1. A roaring/loud whirring that surges when the car hits a bump or suddenly accerates/decelerates. The fan clutch turns with resistance while the engine is cold, so it seems to be properly damped, but it has noticeable lateral play. The clutch body moves but the hub appears to have no play on its axle, so hopefully there's no damage to the clutch mounting on the block. I feel like a worn clutch adequately explains the surging whir.

2. A distinct rattle which is unaffected by vehicle motion, is markedly more pronounced when the engine is cold. The noise seems to lessen when the engine is under load and is either gone or unnoticeable after the car has been driven for a while and the engine has gotten up to temperature. This noise has more or less been there since I've owned the car (I can't remember first noticing it). I assumed it was diesel clatter or valve noise, as this is my first diesel vehicle.
Does this sound like a vacuum pump that's trying to warn me of its impending death?

not sure on those, but another thing to consider is the A/C clutch.
