Looking for a way to research vin for 1977

I have a 1977 240D and because the vin is not 17 numbers long and it is older that an 81 I can not pull a carfax. I have googled this for a few days and have had no luck. Does anyone have a way to find this info?

Thank You
David

Thanks but this link says

Attention! The system of automatic decoding VIN correctly works only with identification numbers of the automobiles which have been released after 1980.

My car is a 1977

It worked for my 1980 wagon, which was a 14 digit vin. I just had to put "wdb" in front of the 123190........
Somewhere there is a post about changing a certain digit in the middle to 1 from some letter, or something like that. I'm sure somebody will chime in.
