Bad Primer Pump?

I bought a new Bosch primer pump because my old one leaks when priming. I installed the new one (the old one was a pain to get out, there just isn't much room to work there with the two fuel lines running beside where you are supposed to fit a wrench in there). But it will not do anything. I pumped away like crazy, but it would not move the fuel at all. I am assuming the pump is defective, but should I have put some oil in it before installation to prime it?
