Biofuel looks like peanut butter

I have make around 500 gal of biofuel. I do not take any short cuts and have had no problems-fuel looks and tests good. I thought it was a no brainer. The last batch that I made, turned hard and looks like peanut butter. Has anyone else had any bad batches of bio. Any ideas what went wrong?

Peanut butter!?! I've had some that was the same color right when I added the methoxide mixture but after an hour of stirring it was always the right color. Its always came out right, too. I wonder what could make it turn to that consistancy.

Did you use partially hydrogenated oil? I used some and got something that was thick and dark colored. It was the glycerides that didn't get turned into methyl esters. You end up having to use a ton of lye to get the reaction to go to completion.

Try going to Infopop or BiodieselNow and ask there if you haven't already.

I am thinking that I did not have my lye mixed good enough when I added it to the oil. That would explane why it turned to peanut butter. There was not enough lye to make the reaction.

Is the peanut butter regarding the consistancy???

I had a medium sized batch (15gal) not go to completion...didn't look so good...

Not sure about peanut butter but it was much thicker than it should have been...

My guess is a combination effect,

The lye and methanol not being mixed well,
and water in the oil

You may have gotten an incomplete reaction,
just enough to suspend the water in the oil.

Maybe try heating a small amount of the peanut butter and see if it seperates back out. Careful there may be unreacted methanol in there.
Do not want things to go boom.

Did you try a titration to make sure you used enough lye? I would try one if you didn't, and I would do it 2-3 times to make sure it is right. If it titrates higher than 4-5 I wouldn't use the oil. You have to use ton of lye when the titration levels are that high. In one of my test batches I didn't add enough lye and got a solid dark brown mass.

Check the temperature that you did the reaction at. Get it up to around 120 degrees F. I have penut butter right now, but it is outside and the cold weather will do that to it. Diesel is better in cold. Try and mix it with some fuel addative.
