Hello,
I have read your items last week or so. I've never owned a diesel. This one I purchased off of Ebay but was able to see it and drive it before bidding. It is in good condition, from looking at it and driving it. The main question I had was the fact the Transmission Fluid was never changed and previous owners says it might be best not to do it, or you may create problems (leaks he mentioned). I'm a firm believer if it isn't broke to leave it alone, but I also believe basic maintenance, and would be happy to leave it alone if somebody told me its not necessary. The car has 159K on it, shifts fine, runs fine. Any input would be appreciated. Steve |

i dont think my trans fluid was ever replaced on my 300d. i bought it in august and 1 month later i replaced the fluid and filter.
i would definatelly do it, and as long as your rubber gasket is not bad, it wont leak. change it out and get that filter repalced.

If your going to drop the pan to replace the filter you may also want to consider doing this:
Run, don't walk, to the dealer, get a K1 kit!!! Danny

If it operates fine, I would just change the fluid, filter and gasket. Some here have reported over 400K from a properly maintained trans (fluid/filter change every 30K or so), but if it's long overdue, well, it's long overdue.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will wait a month then order the K-1 Spring Kit and change the fluid and filter. I plan on draining the Converter since I see this is possible. Any precautions here? Thanks again

turn engine CW only, don't fully fill trans at first, removing crossmember under TC plug is less messy and gives the best chance not to strip or crossthread TC plug. search this subject for more info

Removing that huge crossmember is completely unnecessary. I did it with it on, the fluid just drips off the edge, right into the container you place underneath. Works great, and no removing big crossmemeber and lots of bolts. Not messy at all. Whats messy is taking the pan itself off, and having the valve body drip ALL over you. *Puts flame suit on*. ![]()

I take the crossmember off it makes less of a mess. Its only on their with 6 bolts I use my air gun to spin them right off.
Changing trans fluid is a crappy job, I'm going to the dealer next time.
