SLS Rant

I was visiting my girl today and just for "fun" I opened the big SLS cap. At first I thought all was well but then realised that the filter was missing I then came to the conclusion that the spring in the glove box was for the missing SLS filter after all. Have I done serious damage to my car by driving it this way? I never thought to check the filter. I checked the fluid level weekly. I should have known in the fall when I bought her that something wasn't right. Everyone I have come in contact with outside of this forum has no idea what the SLS is or for! I ask all the flea-bayers if the SLS is working on the latest "cherry" they are trying to pawn off and none even know what/where it is!!! I just want to scream on top of large buildings " Attention all TD owners! Your car has SLS and it may or may not be working! If the rear sags you have probably neglected one of the more expensive items that is the easiest to maintain! The insinuation that the rear shocks- a cheap fix- need replacing is wrong! You should all go sit in the corner with your dunce hats on! Thats all for my rant, never mind I haven't smoked in 4 days

I'm not real sure who you are ranting about, but then again I don't really need to know....
While we are on the subject, I have a new filter for my wonderfully working SLS (recently repaired), and am not sure how to get the old one out. I can get the cap off, and bend the hyd. line quite disturbingly to get the filter out of the reservoir, but how does that spring come loose?
BTW, you will prolly be fine, just get your new filter on there.

1.) I was aiming at no one here
2.) You have to push the spring up and wiggle around as the end thats in the cap is a hook thru an eye, What a PITA!
3.) And I already ordered my filter

Thumbs up

For what it's worth, those 745i BMWs come with SLS and don't have a filter.

I think the SLS filter is typical MBZ overkill (the PS filter is too IMHO) so unless your system is in the midst of self distructing I doubt the filter makes much difference. All else equal I'd still keep a good filter in place because if the system does start to spew a few parts then the "overkill" won't look so unnecessary. That said, I've never heard of any of these systems failing in such a way that they coughed up abrasive parts into the fluid. Usually they just leak their way to a slow death. If you've maintaned the fluid level you should be fine.

First, don't bend that line. Unbolt it. There is a nut on there for a reason.

Second, there should be a clip somewhere on the filter holding it on. It's been so long since I fiddled with that on my TD, I've forgotten where it is.
