Hello!
I searched as extensively as I could, and did not find anything on this site related to this, so if this has been posted before, I apologize. Where are the body drains on the W116 chassis? I just acquired a '79 300SD that's got water in the footwells, and I'm hoping that this problem is something on the lines of a draining issue (not too dissimilar from the hood hinge pocket drains on a 123 that can lead to water in the rear footwell) as opposed to a leaking windshield seal (the rubber's extensively cracked). It appears that there's more water in the rear footwells than in the front footwells, but I'm not certain...I haven't been able to drive the car yet. But, the rear floormats were much damper than the front mats, although the front mats were damp. There wasn't any standing water in the footwells like when this happened on my 123 when I first got it. I didn't readily see any drains under the hood (by the hinges, in the wheel wells, etc), but I could easily have missed something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know the 116 is prone to rust, so I want to get this taken care of ASAP...the car's almost completely rust free, and I'd like to keep it that way. Thank you in advance!

Front Window seal is likely the issue....Mine are getting done this spring for the same reason. Frnt and back...both leak due to age and years in Arizona. yeah there are others that could cause it too...no I haven't taken the time to locate all of them yet however.

Thank you for the response.
How hard is it to do the window seals? Is this a DIY thing, or should I be looking for a competent shop? Heaven knows I'm mechanically inclined, but I've never done any glass-related work before... Thanks again

I'm not sure on the 116, but they are there on the 123 under the hood hinge. You may have to keep poking around with a wire or coat hanger.

My 240D has this problem and I've posted about it. I'm in the process of fixing this problem. The car is a jewel and completely rust-free except for the very rear of the floor board from years of interior leakage. Check the following:
- Window seals (silicone between the glass and the seal can fix this leak if the rubber is still in decent shape) - Behind the battery - Cowl drains (the hood spring pockets) - Rubber boots for vacuum hoses in the door jambs - Also make sure your trunk drains are operational by poking a screwdriver through them. Keep in mind that rust can be hiding under the insulation on top of the floor or underneath cracked undercoating. If you have a moist area, it's a good idea to peel off some of this insulation to have a better look and patch it up with some POR15 or similar product if necessary. Good luck.

windshield leaks
Cut off old rubber that hangs out past moulding, then carefully fill with black silcone. never leak again.
