engine coolent leaking more!!
Most of you said i shouldnt worry about a small leak of engine coolent until it becomes major, well i didnt worry but now its excesive leaking!
Took the car to school and just got back now its leaking alot of engine coolent! Once i got in the garage and got out the car i heard splashing drips. Look under the car and see alot of engine coolent coming out steaming hot! so i put the car in nuetral and roll it out but i cant see where its coming from:confused: Where should i look any pics on specific locations to look? EDIT: it is coming from the front of the engine but when i try to follow the little flow of enigne coolent i loose the trail once i pass the radiator fan. |
The water pump is a likely candidate. When they leak, they tend to get progressively worse. They also tend to leak just after the engine is shut down. So if the leak is coming from behind the fan, look at the water pump.

if it is the water pump what can i replace to stop the leaking?

Agree with Brian: I had the same thing happen with my 83 240D.
Water pump time. |
I had a bad coolant leak on my W115 and at first I thought it was the water pump so I replaced it, but at closer examination i found out it was the rubber hoses so I replaced the hoses and all was well.
I recommend that you replace your water pump and all the hoses aswell. |
autozone loans out radiator pressurizor
with the engine cool, pump up the system to about 8 or so psi and watch for leaks. Much easier to find leaks when you aren't worried about parbroiling yourself.
the front of my 82SD has several hoses that are difficult to get at. water pump has a weep hole top and bottom put finger over hole and see if it has water pushing out the hole. if not, it could be the shaft seal, or the gasket itself... also in the same general area is a small steel line with banjo bolts that transferrs coolant between the block and the head. I think it is called a steam line look over it pretty well, but don't open it up, unless you want to replace the crush washers. around to your left, are the hoses that connect the thermostat housing to the block, it is about a 1.5" hose and mine leaked, so that could be the problem, but to replace it, you will need thermostat housing gasket as well. I strongly reccomend you get the autozone pump up tool, ignore all the adapters that come in the kit, just hook the end of the pump up where the radiator cap goes and start pumping. then look for leaks. enjoy! What if i just replace the gaskets. ********.com has the gaskets for about 50cents. The water pump itself is $50. But that $50 i dont have until next week (paycheck)
|
It's likely the water pump, not the gasket leaking. The internal seals on the water pump have likely failed, and water coming out the weep hole is your sign to replace the water pump.
If you don't have the $ to fix it until next week, park the car. If you overheat themotor, you'll wish you only had to replace a $50 pump. |

One caution on this. The core being returned MUST have an MB star on it. No core value on aftermarket water pumps.
|
Another good reason to buy the genuine MB part.
|
definately
find the source of the leak before buying parts.
