96 W 210 diesel Belt tensioner shock

Argh - need some advice on steps replacing belt tensioner shock. When loosening lower nut,it can't come out enough, resulting in not enough clearance for lower part of shock to "slide" out. Do I need to remove fan shroud, belt & pulley just to get clearance ? I briefly loosened shroud for more visuals, but didn't see nut to loosen pulley. So much for my before breakfast task. This could be the last of 3 (hopefully for awhile) repairs on car, & thanks to this forum mucho doneros saved. Happy Easter !

I don't know the answer to your question, but want to ask what was the failure mode? Leaking?

I was in the same situation you where when I tried to replace my belt tensioner shock. I ended up having my indy do it.... But other sources I looked stated that the fan clutch had to come off to give access.....

Failure

Matt, the failure was not leaking, but noise due to worn bushing.

As I recall the fan, fan shroud and water pump pulley need to come off. It's really not hard if you have the correct tools and the fan bolt isn't seized. You need the stubby 8 mm MB socket and the water pump pulley holding tool. You may be able to find them on Ebay or some of the tool stores (use Google) or you can order them from your dealer.

I was able to replace mine without removing the pulley but just barely. I wiggled the bolt out as far as I could, then was able to angle it just so that I was able to pull the bottom of the tensioner past it, but reinstalling the new one required some "gentle persuasion" to knock it past the small bit of bolt still protruding through the hole. Looking back on it I would have bit the bullet and done it the "right way" but on my car, it was possible to do it without going to all that trouble...
