Flywheel questions

I've searched this forum, and to no avail. can someone tell me what flywheels fits the 300d?, I've also heard there will be a vibration/balance issue as well can someone confirm/dispel this

there are a lot of benz flywheels that will bolt up and work, but the correct one for a 300 is about 38# i have heard. there is a fellow on this site that has two that he will sell. most folks have been using 240 fws which weigh 28#. these seem to work ok. the 300na with the correct fw is extremely smooth at idle. the heavy fw dampens vibration admirably. i had a 300d that came from the factory as a euro stick, 1983 vintage.

according the the fsm these fws are balanced with the crank, but in actual practice most seem to be neutrally balanced. i have come to the conclusion that they occasionally balance fw and crank together if the crank is found to be difficult to balance by itself. so i recommned checking your fw that you take off for balance. if it is neutral (balanced) by itself you can safely put a neutrally balanced fw back on. i had my spare 240 fw checked by my machinist who spun it on his crank grinder i believe and found it to be neutral.

several of us have had this experience with neutrally balanced benz fws but since the fsm says they are balanced with the crank i think it is best to at least check it.

good luck. these cars are very sweet to drive with a stick. and the stick trannys are about as bulletproof as they come, so it is a particularly nice way to go in an older car.
