Hood release cable w126 300sd 1983

My cable needs to be replaced. The outer is broken by the adjuster in the engine compartment.

Q1 - a posting from 2002 suggests using the old cable to drag a wire from the cabin into the engine compartment and then using this wire to drag the new cable back again. This posting was for a w123. Any reason this will not work for a w126?

Q2 - do I need to remove anything more internally than the kick panel under the dash (same one that covers the cruise amp)?

Q3 - how does one test adjustment before finding yourself locked out of the engine compartment?

Tnx
