Need help id'ing this MB diesel truck

This pic was sent to me by one of the ebay'ers that is looking at my 300D that I have listed. The truck says 407D on the side and he says it has a four cylinder diesel engine. I think I remember him saying that it is about a '76. I am thinking the engine is a 616 engine like what was in the 240D at that time. His name is Chris (PA area) and is into old BMW's like we are the 123's. I think he wants to convert over to the 123 side and I warned him that it is addictive. Hopefully he will come along here pretty quick and sign up and post. He asked me to post this and ask for help id'ing the engine. Anybody have any clues?

That unit is probably going to have an OM314 installed in it. I'd bleed to have a Doka like that for the farm....

The '7' in 407 means 70 horsepower. When the 616 was put in MB trucks it was rated at 70hp. I had a 307d with a 616 in it. So, I think there is a good chance it could be a 616. If I'm not mistaken, the 314 was rated at 80 hp so shows ups as XX8. (or was that the 352?)

Kerry,
The 352 is the big inline six...130hp. And, yes the 314 is 80-85hp. I never knew that about the last digit being the hp...

For further edification: an XX6 would be a 60hp 615 (220d) engine. The first number 2XX, 3XX, 4XX, 5XX is the weight carrying capacity of the chassis in tons.
The Sprinter models still carry these kinds of numbers in Europe, except that horsepower needs the last two digits now that MB has figured out that trucks can actually use more than 100hp.

MB sold the tooling for this style of truck/van to an Iranian company and they are still manufactured there. A quick trip to Teheran could get you lots of new parts. The tooling for the next generation of trucks/vans was sold to Tempo in India where they are now made.

Yep that's my truck!!!!

Hi,
i just brought that in from germany at christmas time.
i like it alot but it is SLOW. 80km MAX (50mph), it is a four cylinder with four speed and a very low geared rear. it has 34k km on it about 24k miles. it was so easy to get it into the country. two forms available on line and a check for customs $883.xx. so now it is an orphan and i have no info on it, like oil filter and fuel filter. both seem to be oversized for this motor but it is probably heavy duty. thanks for the posts. add more info if you can. i will check back.
thanks

Here's the best English speaking parts source I know of:

http://www.eurocarparts.co.uk/

Should be able to get you everything you need. You'll need to talk to Patrick in the export division. They'll send you a catalog for the 'commerical' parts which means trucks and vans.

Interesting how easy it was to get into the country. How much did it cost to ship over here? If it's a 616 engine, some parts are the same as the 240d car engine but other parts are different. Does the oil filter housing point down towards the back of the truck on the back left of the engine?

The truck shares the same "face" as my 1975 Motoroam RV, which I'm told, has the OM314 motor. (Thanks to this forum for info).

I have some owner's service manuals, etc that are not a lot of help in the chassis section. The maintence schedules are useful.

It is not fast, but on a long, straight stretch of I-10, we actually nudged 60MPH- not very comfortable at that speed.
We have the 5-speed transmission, should be a 6!
