AC Rebuild New or Rebuilt?
I'm replacing the dryer, expansion valve, and blowing out all the lines. My question is has anyone had luck with a advance auto rebuild on the compressor. I'm pretty sure that they are all gm type compressors anyway. Any input appreciated.

I'd recommend a new one, but you can go for a reman if you plan to sell the vehicle or something of that nature.

Whatever you do, don't ask for technical advice at Advance auto, especially when it comes to AC. "USE EXTRA STOP LEAK!!" "R12? THAT'S ILLEGAL!"

Yep, definately get a new one, if you shop around you should be able to find one for under $200.

Use R12. It's not much more, and it's the right thing. Your pressures will be less, the oil will be compatible, the charge will last longer and it will work better. That's less wear on your compressor. I paid $96 for a reman four seasons some years ago, it still works.

Rebuilt compressor
I bought a rebuilt at Advance tonight, prepping to do the work Sat afternoon. A rebuilt was $108, and instock. A new was $197 and had to order. Rebuilt had a one year, new had a two year warantee. Considering the original ran 13 years, I bought the rebuilt. I did get a warning from the Advance guy that for the warantee to be in effect I had to replace the drier and the expansion valve at the same time. I told him I'd already mail ordered them, got a warning to keep receipts as proof I replaced them. Was planning to take pictures too.

So how does joe average get his hands on R12 in a small quanity at a reasonable price. Would AC shops be willing to recharge with it if you do the replacement parts yourself??

R 12
I use the auto hobby shop at the local Army base. I do the work at home, drive there, and they do the vaccum pull and check for leaks. I plan to refill with Freeze 12.
