Evaporator flushing w/o removing.....
Just a quick question: The only part of flushing the evap I'm having trouble picturing is how I get the flush into the evaporator. I don't have a flush gun, and will be using the pour and blow out with compressed air method.
The fittings for the evap that go into the exp valve point DOWN, so how best to get the flush into the evap? |
JimmyL.....could you jury-rig a spray system...like a pump-up garden sprayer to inject the flush?? I can see this gallon pickle jar with a outlet hose plumbed into the lid and extended to the bottom of the jar and a bike tire inner tube stem to pressurize the system...or a modified enema bag!! ;-)
OR get the canned pressurized stuff like DieselGiant sells (why re-invent the wheel?). Pouring liquid flush uphill is kinda like pushing a rope! She no work so good. Good luck! Keep working, I can smell those 100 degree days...they're getting closer and closer!! |
I used clear tubing and a hose clamp on both lines. Pour flush in with a funnel.
Worked great. Danny |

I just spent last summer building a pressure bleeder for the brakes (which subsequently blew the rubber buttons off the brake reservoir:eek:  ), so I'm sure I can either use that, or the tube method. Simple question, good answers. Thanks! |
funnel and tube as stated, also you can use a big syringe without needle (like the ones used for baby cough syrup, ect..free at walgreens) just pour acetone, mineral spirits or whatever in a cup and suck up with syringe and squirt. also the brake cleaner is aerosol and has a little straw with it. I try to finish with acetone or brake cleaner because it evaporates fast.

Would alcohol also be a good final flushing agent? How would brake cleaner be on the new seals and the nylog? I'm assuming fine, but thought I'd ask. |
the seals (o-rings) are put on after the flushing, so they are not exposed to anything. alcholol would work as a flushing medium.

Jimmy,
I'm going to order that flush gun we discussed on ebay (along with the gauges + vac pump) so if you need to borrow it to hook to compressed air, I could maybe just have the gun only shipped to you. :) |
You dont need a flush gun to flush out any portion of your A/C system, if you use the aerosol like I use. Just look at the pictorial and it will show you how to flush the evap.

Diesel Giant,
How does the AC system for the 123 compare to the 124 models? I have a 1995 300D that was recharged last year and has completely lost its charge. Thinking a rebuild is worth doing as well rather than killing the ozone layer 1x/year. Cheers Bob |
easy evaporator flushing method
I assume if you are flushing the system and doing general repairs and upgrades, that you will be replacing the expansion valve (you should do this). Do not throw the old one away....secure it in a vise and use an electric drill with a 1/4 or 3/8 inch bit and drill out the insides of each side. Then blow out all the chips. Now re-install this in its normal place, and you will now be able to flush the evap. from the engine compartment using the ends of the two hoses, and you will clean the hoses as well. Also, this method makes it easy to forward and reverse flush.
Good Luck, Mark |
