Oil grade for 77 240d and 80 300sd

I have searched the net and this site without any luck.

For years, I have used Delo 400 but was wondering what else would work. Both cars leak and I have to add a quart or two between oil changes.

The user manuals in both cars say to use SAE 30 wt or 20-50 oil. They do not mention any grade like "C..." or anything else.

Does this mean that almost any motor oil can be used in these older cars?

Thanks

No, don't go just using any type of oil. Use a proper diesel rated motor oil. Some good ones that come to mind are Mobil Delvac, and Shell Rotella. Here's a good list of oils.

I was told here a few years ago the DELO stands for Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil. Must be good.

I use DELO 15-40 or Rotella 15-40 summer and 5-30 Rotella or Mobil 1 in the Winter for my F350 and my MBs.

I also use Rotella or DELO 400 15W-40. I've used them in all my vehicles, gas or diesel, since 2003. Before that, I always had gassers and always used Castrol GTX. I've had suspension issues (lots), electrical problems (a few, mainly with the Lincoln I no longer own), and driveline issues (mostly limited to a Suzuki that I also no longer own), but I haven't lunched a motor since 1996.
