1981 300SD Speedometer Question

My son's 1981 300SD speedometer markings indicate a maximum of 85 mph. Some other 300SD vehicles show a top speed of 120 mph.

Does anyone know why?

if i remember correctly 81-82 merc diesels had 85mph top speeds, and 83-85 had 120mph. Most people buy the 120mph and upgrade.

late 70's to early 80's all cars had
Max 85 Speedo's thank Carter and the Gas crunch for it.
