1983 300D front passenger door lock actuator

how does the vertical shift rod disconnect from the front passenger door vacuum element? I've tried unscrewing it but it seems to spin within the element's clear plastic sleeve. Also, the old (and bad) element's female plastic casing completely surrounds the shift rod, but my new element's casing only goes about 280 degrees around.
I've searched here, at braingears(it showed the older vacuum element), in my chilton's, nuthin'!
This is probably one of those "it's so easy, there's no need to walk people through this" tasks, but I would appreciate any help.
