300TD Lost Oil Pressure

New member here, I have a '82 300TD with 260,000 miles.
I was at highway speed when engine slowed, oil pressure went to zero and all warning lights came on. Engine cranked but wouldn't restart.
Had it taken home on rollback and left it untill morning.
In the morning it started normally, quiet, but still no oil pressure.
I shut it off immediately and it here I am. There is oil on the dipstick and there is no scorched, burning oil smell of engine death.
Mechanical oil pressure gauge?
I don't know which came first, oil pressure loss or engine dying.

Any idea$??

Thanks,
David

It is very suspicious that it stopped.. so you need to be really careful in your further checking to be sure you don't aggravate whatever may have happened.
I would put an independant mechanical guage onto it.... and only turn it over enough to see if there is some movement..
It is possible for the oil pressure valve on the back side of the oil pump to unscrew and fall out into the pan. Not common... but listed in the MB Factory Shop manual as something to check out. There are about five versions of that valve so check and put the latest recommended one in if you get the chance.
Since it is at the front only the lower oil pan would need to be taken off ... and you might want to do that and check a rod cap for any damage if you find you were actually without oil pressure and that that stopped it...
Report back after the mechanical guage test ... Greg

The oil pump chain or oil pump itself might have failed. The part falling off the pump as mentioned is a good thought too. Since engine slowed on the highway with no indicated oil pressure and would not restart with no indicated oil pressure. I would pass by the ideal of a failed pressure gauge or sender. If it sounded normally when you restarted the next morning the removal of the front oil pan would be my first thing. Probably the least serious possible cause from your description. You still had your oil and no oil pressure indicated. I suspect the engine restarted because it cooled down a lot. Hope it is not more serious.

the,

I lost oil pressure in my 300SD one time. Adding more oil fixed the problem. Since adding more oil solved the problem and I had no idea why it happened, I just let it go.

Later, I replaced the bottom oil pan and found that the rubber part that dips into the oil and is on the bottom of the oil pump, broke, came off and was laying in the bottom of the pan. Thus it was necessary to have a higher oil level in the pan for the pump to reach the oil in the sump.

Replacing the rubber part solved the problem of needing a higher oil level in the oil pan.

So there you go. Drop the pan and look. Let us know what you see. Also, look specifically at the oil pump chain tensioner, clip and spring.

I *finally* had time today to crawl under and take a look.....
The oil pump chain is broken. There is still a lot of oil around the crankshaft and rods so hopefully the engine shut down before tearing itself apart.
I'm on the hunt for a chain and probably an oil pump now.
It looks like a new chain can be installed without a whole lot of teardown.
I'm still going to pull a rod cap out of morbid curiosity. I may not even want to know what the bearings look like.
