240D Losing power/stalls

My 82 240D w/82K miles suddenly loses power and dies. After cranking her a bit, she rough idles until I can feather some revs and slip it drive. This repeats itself in half mile to one mile increments, until I limp home. 3/4 tank. Air conditioning off. Normal heat and oil pressure.

I'm mystified. Can someone help me?

Hudson

Sounds to me like you need to replace the fuel filters. There are two, a "spin-on" filter that is actually held by a bolt and doesn't spin on, and an in-line plastic filter in the fuel line from the tank.

Another idea is to check your hand fuel primer pump and make sure the knob on the top is tight. Sometimes they vibrate loose and won't seal out air.

A search here can turn up a lot of info on both common problems.

Change both fuel filters and the air filter.

Generally power loss is cause by a restriction in the fuel lines or a restriction in the air intake.

If that doesn't work, it's time to check your tank screen.
