Turbocharger noise?

My '80 300SD is making a weird noise....

When I'm accelerating, I hear turbo whine.....I have a complete closed exhaust system, and the noise is coming from where the turbo is.

Bad Bearings?!?! are Rebuild kits an easy DIY thing??

where in Canada can I get a kit?

its a turbodiesel.....turbo= turbo whine under acceleration.. dont freak over a normal noise...its ok .. turbo whine is good...

with the engine off and turbo area cool
if you want to make sure your turbo is fine remove the u tube that is on the turbo intake and air cleaner... fit your hand in there and try and see if their is axial movement on the X axis.. if you do then you have shaft play..... next test.. see if it will spin freely.. just spin it with what ever finger you have jammed up in there and feel for the blades going by.. does it spin freely.. then your find.. if not then consider a rebuild

and be sure the engine is off when you do it.!

i think if you have an intake leak between the turbo inlet and the air filter you may also get more whine.

but i love to listen to it. on my cummins if in cruise, i can tell by the turbo whine when i hit a small hill. the whine picks up. you can hear it on the semis as you go by too.

on my benzes it is there but less hearable.

oops... i edited it when i noticed he had an om617 car.. must of deleted it.. but its back now.. i love the turbo whine.. cant wait for my cherry bomb

This noise sounds like turbo whine, but it sounds like open exhaust kind of whine without the exhaust sound. It echos thru the neighborhood when I give it gas.

Might be a leak on the flange that joins the manifold and the turbine housing. Mine had a leak for a bit and screamed louder than a freightliner when I put my foot into it. I bet people were wondering what was wrong with my car. It turned out a couple of the nuts on the studs of the manifold had vibrated off, and a leak developed. A new gasket and a couple new nuts fixed the problem.

Mind you I have a 602, but it should be the same on the 617.

You know, I think that is what it is! When I'm under the hood and I blip the throttle I see a puff of exhaust come up from the rear of the engine. I just assumed it was maybe a manifold leak at the head...now is my chance to re-build my exhaust system! :D

it's a cool sound, but because it is a leak, it does sound a little sickly, sometimes it pulses like the turbo charger is cutting in and out, I guess that'd be just the leak plugging and unplugging....I'm probably going to re-do the entire air intake and exhaust system. I got a bug in my head to polish my valve cover and intake manifold...:D

With everything all sealed up you shouldn't hear any turbo...maybe if you gave it a bunch of "throttle" and then let off you'd hear it whine down.

PanzerSD 07-28-2006 06:18 AM

yeah, see that's the thing, I can give it light "normal" throttle and the noise is there...sounds cool, but I know I shouldn't be hearing that sound...
if I give it VERY light throttle it doesn't appear...

I'll take a look at my Turbocharger tomorrow...

rrgrassi 07-28-2006 10:45 AM

My 617 whines also, but you can hear it only at 3000 rpm or higher. It is not real loud. When cruising at 70, no whine, but hit a hil or accelerate, you hear a little whine.

You shouldn't be giving it gas...tisk tisk. What is the surging or kicking in/kicking out you are talking about? That doesn't sound normal. Mine whines a little when taking off but I think of it as more of a hum than a whine.

Is it a red or white whine?:D :D Give it gas??

Probably just needs a couple of bolts tightened at the exhaust manifold to down pipe connection.;)

no-blue-screen 07-28-2006 01:58 PM

Yeah, I would say giving a diesel engine 20 centane gas would make it whine just a little :D

I should have expected that :D

well, I did take a peek at the goings on down there, and the down pipe is securely bolted to the turbo, but at the botom of the pipe is some flex pipe...if this is normally there, okay, it's split in a smal part.
that, coupled with a Manifold leak is my noise, and the "kicking in and out" is the the engine rocking flexing the "flex pipe" and periodically closing the leak...

so I priced some 3" tubing and 90 degree mandrel bent sections and I'll rebuild that later when I have time...

I admit that the sound is REALLY awesome when it's constant..
My Wastegate is on the bottom with the diaphram towards the front...is that a KKK or Garret Turbo?

Can someone post a photo of either turbo? I'd like to look at the waste gate area to compare with mine, I think Mine may have been hobbled by someone previously.....
