Oil brand and weight
Ok, I know this will open up a can of worms, but want to get some info from those of you that have had MB's a while. I have an 84 300D, which brand and weight of engine oil is best for it? It has approx. 246,000 on the clock, which as far as I know is correct...Thanks guys...

The "brand" with the highest "C" rating such as CF4 and meets your temp ranges. For summer, 15W-40 would be a very good place to start. (C= Diesel rated oil)
"Brands" are usually used for advertising reasons. Especially when the cost is very similar.

Just did the 295,000 mile service on my '82 300D. I use Delo 400 15W40.
Use any brand you want. Just make sure it is diesel rated oil. (The oil spec should start with a "C".) Cheers, Wes |

As Wes said " any brand you want" as long as it is API diesel rated "C" ie. CF4
I had a 84 300SD that I ran almost exclusively on 15W40 (any brand on sale with C rating) from 67K miles when I got it until 312K when I sold it. Sometimes in extreme cold winter conditions I would run a good 10W30 when temps would stay around 0 to 25 deg. F. All of it dino oil...no synthetic!

A little synthetic can be a very good thing!
I am running Shell Rotella 15-40W. I thought all was well but a friend suggested substituting 1 quart of synthetic. He knew an oil company chemist who told him that you get most of the benefits of synthetic with just a quart mixed in with the regular oil. He may have been assuming a standard gas burner which uses 4-5 quarts. Well, I'm cheap so I bought a quart of synthetic and split it between my 98 Chevy 6.5L TD and my 83 Mercedes 300DT. The day after the oil was added, I heard something on my 300DT I had never heard before, the whine of the turbo as it spun up. I've only owned this car for a couple of monthes and although it has 240,000 miles on it, it was just sitting by a barn for the last few monthes before I bought it according to the PO. Anyway, bottom line is I'm going to continue to add some synthetic with my oil changes. Maybe even spring for a whole quart for the 300DT next time.

If you have deep pockets and expect extreme conditions for your engine, by all means Delvac-I or else the tried and tested Delo 400 or Delvac Super will do just fine.
