4 Speed Shift knob threads
 
Does anybody know if Mercedes stuck with the same shift knob thread size through the 1990s? I have found a few good looking shift knobs on ebay off of much later cars and am wondering if there is any chance that they will fit. Thank you. -Bryan

This guy is talking about manual transmission shift knobs "4 Speed Shift knob threads", everything being referenced here is for automatics.

I bought a nice after market knob but could never use it. They all seem to come with allen set screws which always came loose. What I just figured out is that I can get a used stock knob at junkers and just cut off the threaded sleeve that I need and J/B weld it into my new knob. Worked great for me.

I like this one off of a 1996 C280, Just wish I knew if it would thread on to the stock shift lever.

Love those leather covered shift knobs! They aren't made to thread on, they have a locking collet incorporated into the black plastic cone on the botton side, it turns 90 degrees to open then when the knob is pushed down onto the shaft and the cone is twisted back it clamps down on the flats on the tip of the shift lever made for them. Despite being so easy to put on it won't come off easily!
I like the look of Zebrano but not the feel, esp in the winter when its cold. And you have to worry about the finish getting scratched on the wood knobs. Leather is sooo Plush!
I solved the problem for fitting one of those to a 124 car, by way of special MB arm off a 202. But I haven't fiured out how to put on a 123 yet. Here's pics of three leather knobs, two in original MB shades, the third is attached to the lever arm and after SEM painting to match the Burgundy interior on my silver '87 300Dt. No way was I going to put a tan or whatever color the other is in my Burg interior! The SEM paint turned out very well!
Double click on the left pic and you will see SEM sample chips in the background.
I may be able to get another arm for anyone interested (AFAIK is suitable124 chassis only!)

Auto shifters have 8mm threads, standard is 10mm.

Thanks for the info. Do you think that some sort of threaded adaptor could be used in place of the plastic cone?

It would be great wouldn't it.

I could 3d print an adapter, but i would want a metal one :/

perhaps a welder is on the cards ;)

weld a 8mm thread to 10mm coupling nut.
