Changed my transmission fluid for the first time

Well, I changed my transmission fluid for the first time. Moved recently so my jack is still in another town in my parent's garage.

Used the drainage dip in the paved drive and parked the pan over it and crawled under.

I used Mobile One synthetic transmission fluid this time. Measured what came out of the pan but only 3 quarts. I did not know how to drain the torque converter. I could not get completely under the car to see it.

I guess I just changed half of the fluid. I guess I can do it again sooner than 30k miles to change the rest out.

Will the fluid in the torque converter mix with the other fluid???

Dumb question. I know. Never done much transmission work. Changing out my injectors was a breeze compared to getting under the car.

Yes the fluid in the torque converter will mix with the new fluid, and to drain the torque converter you go underneath and look for a little "viewing window" in the front part of the tranny on the bottom, it is there that the little drain plug lines up when you rotate the engine just right. When you get the little plug out another 4 qts will drain out.

When you do a tranny fluid change you also need to remove the pan and tranny filter, and put in a new filter and gasket.

new filter

Yeah,

I put in a new Mahle filter and gasket. THanks for the info on the converter.

When the dealer changes my wife's Honda Accord trans, all they ever do is drain three quarts off and put in three new ones. I figured that was better than nothing since it was way overdue.

The first time you line up the torque converter drain with the access hole, put a mark on the crank pulley so next time it's not so hit or miss.

Sixto
... stay tuned

Hopefully that will be me after this weekend. One thing I can not find an answer to though is if the manual transmissions have a filter ('76 240D). All the references I can find mention automatics. It is probably a dumb question but I am still new to anything that has to do with a tranny.

No, the manual transmissions don't have a filter. Be sure to remove the fill plug first. It would suck to drain the fluid and then find out that you can't budge the fill plug.

Ahh. I had thought so but was not entirely sure. Fill plug. Fill plug? Hmm.. it is a good thing I mentioned this before I had my car immobilized. On all the gasser cars I've had as far as I could tell the only way to get more trans fluid in was through the dipstick tube. And I didn't even futz with the transmission on my 77 240. Looks like I need to spend some more time searching. :book:
