Can any tell me what mods need to be made to put a 606 engine into a 300 sdl??
About 1 1/2 years ago I bought an 87 300 sdl, and imported it into Canada. When I go tit home, I found out the the oil was full of water and algae (not a good sign). Anyways, I changed the oil every 1000 miles for the first 5000 miles, and got it cleaned up. I have now driven this car 50000 miles, and up until recently, it did not use a drop of oil. I could drive 120 mph for 2 hours without stopping (longest I ever had to do that), the oil level would remain rock solid. Just recently, the engine suddenly started to blow oil out the exhaust. Part burnt oil, and part raw as far as I can tell. I have massive blowby. when the engine is idling, and I remove the dipstick, oil comes spurting up the dipstick tube.
I have thought about trying to get more power out if this car, but I started to wonder about putting a 606 engine into it instead. Does anyone know what kinds of modifications I would have to make to do this project, and the possible drawbacks?? Would it be better to buy the turboed or naturally aspirated 606 model?? Thanks in advance for the help.

i believe oil suddenly out the tailpipe usually points to bad seals in the turbo??you may just need a turbo rebuild.

Oil coming up the dip stick tube is VERY bad. It sounds like you have a hole in
piston. The last time I saw oil coming up the oil tube, there was a large hole in the number 1 cyl. |

After the mechanical difficulties (which might not be so severe), you have the electrical difficulties. Remember that the 606 is rack-modulation-by-wire. You'll need the IFI computer from the donor car. But things should be so simple, as the IFI computer communicates with other modules in the car to ensure that it hasn't been transplanted (it won't work if you take the computer from one car and install in another). I presume that you'll need the computer for the remote-locking function at the very least. Possibly the combination control module as well. All of these would need to be either unused, or used in the same car. If you get any from a donor car, make sure that you record the VIN. You'll need it. |

dont the fins swap over the head from a 606 into a 603, so they can have mechanical dependability but with more power potential from the head, IIRC the 606 head is twin cam with 4 valves per cylinder, slap on a holset and beef the tranny up and your game.. forget putting the 606 in a W126 put it in a W123 CD.. drool drool

For all the trouble you might as well go with a 606 turbo.
The blocks are physically similar. You might have to go with the SDL oil pan for crossmember clearance and SDL oil filter block to keep the SDL oil cooler. That might mean a custom turbo drain pipe. Shouldn't be too difficult to fabricate a custom downpipe if the turbo outlet is in a different location. Getting the right radiator hoses might be a challenge but how difficult can that be? Definitely run a 603 IP so everything is where it should be. Possibly a loss in power output since a 603 IP isn't calibrated for 175hp or whatever a 606 turbo puts out. Hopefully the 606 glow relay doesn't need a 606 EDS to function. Do 98-99 E300s have a 722.4 or 722.6? Sixto 93 300SD |

doesn't swapping the IP from the 603 to the 606 avoid the problem with needing the IFI computer?? Does anyone have the information about how the finns do the swap?? Do they have sites that tell how they do that, or a place that I could call for information??

Well, if you could find out what all they have to do for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Cost really, try to find a $1k 606.
![]() Anyway if you are going to do it, do it right. Find a turbo chargeed intercooled 606, and install the IP off your dieing 603. That way you don't need any computers from the 606.

I know, th naturally aspirated models are about $2500- $3500. The only turboed one I could find is $4000.
