Broke a Coil Spring - 87 300D Turbo
The front coil spring of pass side is sheared. Cant believe it, its like 1/2" dia.
Couple questions - 1. how hard is it to change, and what is procedure ? 2. should i replace both front ? 3. what other models use same front spring as my 300D turbo, so I can check the wreckers? Thanks. ![]() Paul

If youre getting new ones, replace both. You need the correct spring compressor to exchange it- its real easy once you have it

The kind that has two plates and a big screw through the middle. I don't think AutoZone rents that kind of compressor. Check the Tools forum.

OK I'll look. I would think I need the one with 2 screws on outside of spring, seeing how I cannot access top or bottom of spring.

check that again, the hole for the spring compressor should be in the lower control arm.

Be careful getting the old pieces out. They might jump out and bite you.

Do a search in this forum on Springs.
You will discover that springs aren't so simple. MB actually matches springs to vehicles and that changes depending on options. Therefore, the front springs from a 300E gas will not be correct for your '87 Diesel. Dealer, or Phil (click Buy Parts above ) should be able to get the correct springs. Do not attempt to remove the springs with anything but the proper spring compressor. Hazardous to your life. Steve |

I understand, Im looking for the tool now. I have spring compressors handy but not the internal one. Would autozone rent it?
As for springs, I know. There are 3 different ones for my car, but all the parts places only sell 1. Honestly, with 250k miles on it, and pulling a spring from a junkyard car that will have at least as many miles on it, I doubt spring rates will be noticeably different. I will look for one that has same length, # of coils, and thickness coils. But after that its negligibile. Im just looking for the correct model to look at, if anyone knows which have similar springs to my 87 300D Id be much appreciative. I did search, did not find my answer.

Call Phill or Rusty (at BuyMBParts), you must have a spring from a diesel, the engine is considerably heavier than the 3.0L gasser and it will sag if you use a gasser spring. You really only need to replace the broken one, but it may not sit completely level if you don't replace both.
You have to use and internal spring compressor on a Benz, you cannot mount an external compressor on the spring. Klann is the best one, I'd avoid anything lighter as those springs are compressed much more than US type springs. Broken springs are a pain -- I had one on my old Dodge Aries. Rides funny. The usual cause is stress corrosion at the weld where new stock is welded on, the springs are made on a continuous process. Peter

OK thanks! I got a fellow member to loan me the correct spring compressor.
I will see if I can find the diesel spring in the junk yard, if not, new. Any advice on which model diesels to search for? Edit - here is spring part #, if that helps : 124-321-2204 This has the red stripe on it.

Well, finally got it repaired.
Had to order the spring new, and when I got it and saw how massive it was -- looks like a locomotive spring - I decided to let the experts wrestle with it. Glad I did, they said it took 5 guys better part of afternoon to get busted coil out and new one in. That tool is very tough to use. Problem is, it BARELY fits between coils all the way extended (to slide in the end plates). And all the way extended means the coil is in an arc. So the tool dont fit up through the middle. And if u compress the coil by jacking up control arm, you cant slide end plates between coils. I couldnt figure it out, and I work on VW's almost for a living. And you guys werent kidding, you would need to compress about 8 coils flat before it would come out / go in. I thnk the shop ended up dropping lower control arm and spindle. No thanks, $100 WELL spent. I'll post pics of broken coil, I have never seen something this massive shear like that. Must be a heavy car...
