80 240D (auto) vs 82 300CD

Anythoughts on the above? Mileage and other conditions comparable. To be used as a commuter about 140 miles round trip.

Use the 300d as the rear gear ratio alone is better. The 240d automatic could do the trips but not as easily in my opinion. Milage might even be better with the 300D.

Thanks Barry - same for the 300CD?

You will probably enjoy the 300CD much more. The 240D might have a 2-3mpg advantage at the expense of having a much less powerful engine.
