rebuilding 300d engine Help

While removing components I lost tension on timing chain before I was able to get a mark on the intermediate shaft to injection pump. I have no reference to where it might be. What should I do before I start assembling the block. How can I find out where the injecter pum shoud be? I have never rebuilt an engine before. Any help would be appreciated.

Line up the cam mark with the #1 piston at tdc when you install the chain. Have the cam rockers off or out of the way when you do this.

There is a mark on the ip where you are supposed to set it to when the crank is set at a certain position (sorry I do not have the number handy right now - do a search on start of delivery). If this had been a Honda it would have been built with the crank at tdc with the mark on the ip lined up. Get a Haynes manual to go by for specs.
good luck

last

the last engine i rebuilt had marks on the top and opposite marks as well which made it hard for me to tell... So what I do is put a pencil or straw in the #1 cylinder and rotate until it is TDC... and I also rotate the head and feel the #1 valves.... This way I know I am not 180 degress out...

Someone else chime in but if I remember right, with motor at 24 deg, line up the two marks on the end of the pump itself and it will run. It may require some adjusting afterward to run good.

Follow Jims advice. If you still have trouble, the timing procedure is laid out quite well in the Haynes manual. It's well worth the $20.

Hope this helps.
