longer lug bolts
I need to run a spacer on my 85 300 sd to fit the later 8 hole wheels on the front without hitting the dust cap. I am looking for bolts that have the stock style ball base and 1 11/16" of bolt after that.
I used to know where to buy longer bolts cheaply but seem to have lost the source. Can anyone recommend? Seems like it was lugnuts.com or such. I posted this over on wheels but also here due to more traffic. Thanks!

I had a set of the eight spoke wheels that fit my 1985 126 380SE. I did not need spacers to clear the dust caps.
I bought a set of 15 spoke wheels for my 300 SD and ran them without the centers because of the problem you have presented here and found the wheels were just too narrow. The car's handling was wiggley. Truth is, they drove me crazy until I replaced them with wider wheels (126 spec). IMHO, sir! |

I read before about the aluminum rimmed cars having longer studs.

If you are talking about the long bolts that were used on the later 15" wheels used on R107, W126 and W201, be careful. There are reports of those breaking above the ball seat, making extraction of the remainder difficult (impossible on the road). I am gradually replacing all the ones on my R107 with shorter bolts. They don't look as good but I don't need that hassle.

I am not talking about the ones with the extended head. Just longer threads on a standard type head.

Your welcome. I found out that my spare rim and my running rims needed different lugs. I was in the process of rotating my wheels at home, and tried to mount the spare to replace the wheel I had taken off. Low and behold, the lugs from the wheel I had taken off were too long, and would not fully seat. If I had been changing a flat along side the road, those lugs would have gotten me nowhere fast!!!

It is a good reason to carry a spare with the same rim as your road wheels.
When one can afford it it is a good idea also to run an identical tire bought new at the same time. When my dad used to go to florida he always used to carry two spares in his volvo 245 since it had a bump on both sides for it. I tended to make fun of him a bit about it but I will say that I have had two flats on a road trip before and it is no fun driving along the shoulder in the dark with semis blowing past at 70 mph. ![]()
