Popped fuse on rear defog.
Got a short on the rear defog circuit on the '79 300TD. Pops the fuse as soon as I hit the button. The light on the switch comes on for a split second and the door buzzer buzzes for about that long, then that's all she wrote.
Any ideas where I can find the short? Thanks, Jay. |
Wired straight to ground.
Some monkey had "repaired" the hot wire to the defroster. They put a new connector on (correctly) the hot wire then screwed it, together with the wire coming from the defroster unit, to the hatch. S/he made no attempt to insulate the screw, but did put a rubber grommet between the connectors and the metal!
I pulled the interior panel off, saw that new connector, and said "O.k., the ground looks good, and they've grounded something else here as well." Then I looked at the other side. The ground looked even better there; a bunch of brown wires! Took me a while to figure it out, but I put heat-shrink tubing on the bolt, and dug around in the spare parts bins for a couple plastic washers. Now, at least the fuse holds, but I'll have to wait for a foggy morning to find out if the thing still works. Jay. |
