Hood hinge latch thingy
On the hood hinge (82 240D) there's a little spring-loaded latch that's supposed to catch on something. The one on my driver's side has the catch-tab broken off and the one on the passenger side has the tab bent and it looks like it'll break if I try to straighten it.
Can someone tell me what the name of these things is or give a part number so I can order new ones? They seem to be rivetted on. I'm assuming I can drill the rivets out, but will I need a special rivet and gun to replace? Thanks for any info. |

This is one that's hard to answer with words. If we were standing next to a car, it would take about 30 seconds to show you.
If you hold thumb pressure on the drivers side thumb catch while moving the hood down slowly, it will release from the slot. Then go to the passenger side and do the same thing, once it is released, you push the hood straight up. This is basically the engine removal position, except I do this anytime I open the hood for any reason other than to quickly check the oil. I expect that to get one from Benz you buy the whole hood hinge mechanism. I would look for a set of hood hinges in the salvage yard. Opening the hood straight up is a mandatory feature for me. I am bald as a cue ball and without natural padding on my head, I can cut it up pretty bad on that grille that hangs down. Good luck, |

You can purchase these hinges at a fairly reasonable cost. I replaced the one on my 300D drivers side because the "catch" tab broke off. I don't know if I still have the part number. They are a pretty straight forward replacement job. I would recommend against going with a used one.

When you put the hood all the way up how close is it to the windshield? And is it locked in place? I keep thinking the hood is going to fall on my head!
I use a prop rod I know thats wierd for a MB but its safe on a windy day...mabey something is wrong with my latches? I'll check them out more closely in the morning. |

The 123 latch does not lock the hood in the full up position. The 124 does.
It will stay up no problem except in a STRONG wind. It will not hit the windshield. It will, however, be struck by the windshield wipers if they are accidentally turned on while hood is full up. Have a great day, |

On my '77 300D one hinge has a slot for the release mechanism to slide into to lock the hood in the full up position. If you are concerned by wind blowing the hood into the windshield, then position the car so the wind will close the hood. Or, tie a piece of rope to the top of the hood and then to the front part of the car on one side of the grill - there are several cut-outs in the sheet metal to tie a piece of rope to.
Good Luck! Tom
