Injector Pop Tester, Generic Instructions

Folks,
I begin this thread, to dispel any misinformation that may, or may not be contained in a related thread..... I scanned this from ..... Diesel Engineering Handbook, 12th Edition; Stinson (pages 116, 117) I do not have a website, and I have a very slow server (I live in the boonies) so I did my best to break it down into small sections, so that I will be below maximum size, but the images will still remain readable.... Folks, I hope that this helps...... however, Fuel Injectors are precision items, and if you don't know what you're doing....it may be best to send your injectors to a Fuel Injection Test and Calibration Shop....there are many through out the USA....ask your local Dodge Dealership where they send their Cummins IP's, to have them serviced. If you do decide to go to an Injection Shop...ask if you can watch...and ask them to show you the Calibration Equipment....you may be quite surprised as to what all is involved...and of the accuracy of the results..... Bottom line.....let the professionals do what they get paid to do....all Injection Shops are not owned by MB, and are generally quite reasonable....it's the precision parts involved that cost $$$$$$$$ SB |
I went to the injection shop in town to get a price on having MY own Bosio nozzles installed and pop tested. They want $40 bucks per injector with me supplying the nozzles. I figure that is $200 just to test them + how much are Bosios worth??? $200 which gives me a $400 bill for injectors....with the same tired springs.(the injection shop said a minimum of $40 per injector and if they needed anything else then it would be more) same Bosch injector bodies that have leaky nipples.
I factor in that two years ago I could have got brand new Monarks (the whole injector+nozzles+pop tested) from C Sean Watts for $80 more than what the injector shop was going to charge just to pop test them at a minimum. I was going to buy some from him but then got broke. He had the best deal going at the time and it made the most sense cost wise to just get them from him.( not sure if he still does the injectors as I have not seen him on here in a while and his costs may have increased since the last couple years) My only option now is to build my own pop tester. How much does that cost? |

The only shop that does pop testing in my part of CA charges $50 to clean and pop test an injector. And then any parts are on top of that. I think that is why so many forum members are happy to use Greazzer for pop testing:

Here is a cheap one

i saw those too, i have been thinking about buying one. i only have 9 sets of injectors (between me and my buddy) that could use a good sonic cleaning and pressure testing. but when you own as many sets of injectors as i do sending them all to a shop to be done gets costly...

When a customer asks for extreme precision balancing, I take them to my local Bosch certified shop Superior Turbo & Injection . |
I had mine pop tested after I thoroughly cleaned and installed the new Bosios by Diesel Injection Services here in Cincinnati. They said you shouldn't have any problems with these. They all tested at right around stock recommendation of 115 bar. They didn't charge me anything! The 240d runs much better, smoother and with what I perceive as improved torque. I still think the IP needs timed and adjusted, a little nailing at idle and some white smoke, but not nearly as bad as pre Bosio. I think fuel economy should be improved as well, haven't finished this tank yet, but I've gone 200miles on a half tank, previous was less, 14 gal tank.
