Magical Properties of Paper Towels in Windshield Vents

Every time i see a diesel Benz, there is always paper towels or a rag stuck in what looks like a vent right in front of the windshield. What is this? When I bought my Benz I found it like this. What does this all mean?! I am thinking of removing mine.

Sounds to me like the diaphrams are busted somewhere that controls the air flow and they are trying to control airflow to the vents they want with paper towels.

Yes, I'll bet it's a bad defrost actuator leaking air to the windshield. Running AC with this air leak on a hot day can cause condensation on the windshield as it does in our minivan with a similar leak.

In a 126 you can replace the defrost actuator by reaching through the glove box hole. You need a skinny arm with two elbows but it can be done. Hopefully the dash doesn't have to come off in a 123.

Defrost is easy in a W123. Sometimes the pod will be fine and the sealing foam on the doors drys out and flakes off.

My defrost vents always bleed while the fan is on, most likely isn't right I'm sure, but has never been enough trouble to bother digging into it yet. When I want the windshield defrosted, they don't blow a lot of air, so I just cup my hand over the left side vent and guide the air into the windshield, works great as an early morning "turbo" defroster, lol. Not to mention the benefits of warming your hands up to regaining feeling warm and fuzzy....just before you lay them upon an icy cold steering wheel....
