1984 190d fuel shutoff

We just got a 1984 190d and we have been having problems with it staying running, after about 15 min. the fuel shutoff will go down and the car will stop. I pulled of the vac. line and it still shuts off. Now we have the stop lever zip tied up and it runs great but I can't shut it off without going under the hood and releasing the zip tie.What would make the valve close with no vacumn present?

knowone has any ideas what it could be? I thought when the shutoff goes bad the engine would not turn offsteve

I thought the vacuum held the valve open and that when you released the vacuum the valve would close and shut off the fuel... Jim

When it would idle and we diconnected the vacumn we had to shut it off by the stop lever.so the vacumn seems to shut it off. but when the vac hose is disconnected and you drive for 15 min the lever goes down and the motor shuts off untill we zip tie it up then all is good but you can't shut the engine down Steve

Are you saying that when the vacuum line is disconnected the engine still shuts off by turning off the ignition key?

It could be that the vac valve in ignition is shot?

Umm...how does the engine turn off if the vac line is not connected?

Try a search for vacuum diagrams for the 190-I know a whole set for the 123's was recently posted.

No the engine will not turn off by the key when the vac line is disconnected and it's idleing, but the stop lever will go down and shut the car off after about 15 min of driving without the vac line connected.there is no vac on the valve but it shuts off when driving, but it will sit idleing for an hour and not shut off. any thoughts? steve

Other than having my car not stop running when I broke my brake booster line, I don't have a lot of experience here. But, my unprofessional, uneducated guess would be that the shut-off valve at the injector pump must be closing after 15 minutes.

I don't know if you can service it. Search the forums for the valve and see what comes up.

I'm not sure I'm exactly clear on what is going on here from your description. However, according to the OM 601 FSM, the connecting rod of the vacuum control unit engages the rocker on the emergency stop lever. You need to get a mighty vac and attach it to the vacuum line on the shutoff and see if it is functional. I had to replace mine when I first got my 1984 190D. It's an easy job. Also, with the mightvac you can check the function of the vacuum shutoff at the ignition switch. It's a necessary tool if you own one of these diesels.

I went back and re read your post. If there is no vac line connected to the shutoff and the lever is going down after a few minutes of operation then the spring in the vac shutoff must have failed. The vac shutoff is spring loaded. Drawing a vacuum pulls the lever up and shuts off the fuel flow. The only way I can explain the scenario described is that the spring has failed and over a period of several minutes of operation the vibration leads to movement of the lever. Otherwise something has gone wrong internally with the IP. Enough rambling for now, I'm sure others with more knowledge can clear this up.

Thanks for all the help. I guess I'll try replacing the valve and see what happens.Is it an easy job to do? I found a post on shutoff valve replacment but it was on the back of the IP mine is on the top
