One hellacious rattle at idle...what is it?
Hi Guys,
My '87 300D turbo has a new LOUD growly rattle at idle. It quiets down at higher rpm, but at idle, it really gets your attention. Checked power steering fluid level. A friend said it might be the vacuum pump. Before I tear into it, I'd appreciate any other thoughts you might have. Thanks! ![]()

i think those engines have a reputation for losing their vacuum pumps catastrophically.

Might check your exhaust system, make sure it's not hitting anything.

Could be almost anything!
I had a real nasty rattle that developed a while ago...it would be real loud at idle but would disappear at higher speeds. I couldnt figure it out, and with loud engine noise, I couldnt pinpoint the exact source.
Then one day when I was removing the air cleaner housing, I found the blue plastic cap to the low pressure port for the AC system that I had lost a while ago. After removing the cap, I never heard the rattle again!! THis is probably more common than you think because most of us set down bolts, sockets etc. in the little "tray" at the air intake and end up "losing" something. Mark

Don't forget heat shields, fan shroud, loose drive belts and motor mounts.

Air Cleaner Mounting
Check your Air Cleaner.....it is attached to a bracket with 3 rubber mounting "screws", Phil has a photo of them in parts......those are known to break over time........whole air cleaner dances around, makes a decent racket.....

Rattle...
If air con is on while you have the rattle, might check the clutch on the compressor. It can make a hell of a noise.

I'm actually in the middle of installing a new ring gear on the 240. It developed a crazy rattle...which I've narrowed down to the bell housing. Since the rattle started exactly when the started started 'missing' - I'm fairly certain that the a couple of broken teeth are being thrown around in there. It sounds terrible.

I have a brand new a/c compressor on it, so I doubt it's that. I guess I could remove the fan belt and start the car. The vacuum pump doesn't run off the fan belt. If the noise stops, is that conclusive it's the vacuum pump? Or is this a bad idea for reasons I haven't thought of?

Check the belt shock. Press it to the side (carefully) when the engine is idling. If it quiets down, you've found the problem.

Rattle at idle
Chedk your water pump and fan clutch. My 350SDL was doing the same thing and I found the fan clutch bad with excessive side play.

I had no idea a worn motor mount could do that kind of damage. My 87 is also making this type of noise and just started doing so a few weeks ago. I know teh entire front end of my car needs replacing, just haven't had time to do so. I know it can't be teh tensioner and such on my car as this was just done about six months ago. I also know it isn't the water pump on mine since I replaced it about 10 months ago. I guess it is time to bite the bullet and replace the worn ball joints, tie rods, drag link, shocks, motor mounts, and every other part I have no desire to replace. The kicker of all of this is that I just finished replacing all of the above on the wife's 84 300D a couple of months ago. What did I do to deserve having to replace the front end components on two cars in a year? The bad part is that I have to pull the springs to do all of this on the 87...or so I gather from reading all of the posts on the subject. Anyone know how much Performance Products charges to rent the spring compressor? I'm not even going to suggest that I am going to use any other compressor than the one intended to do the job properly. For those of you who have replaced ball joints on both the 124 and 123, how similar are the jobs?
