Started the '82 240D today in a parking lot and the engine started to rev. I turned it off with the key. Checked under the hood for a broken spring or linkage, found nothing, so reset everything to idle condition. With hood and door open, started well. But then when the linkage was advanced manually (under hood), the engine would stay at that speed. Hmmm. Got home at high idle speed and flashers. Discovered that the metal tab which fits into the bottom of the accelerator pedal had rusted sufficiently to break off, freeing the bottom of the pedal, which then twisted on the shaft and inhibited its movement. Temporary repair made with a 1" x 1/4" aluminum bar, bent and drilled to take a nut and bolt to mate with the pedal, and a metal screw through the floor pan to anchor it. Meanwhile, have ordered a mounting pad, clip and u-joint for the pedal. I pass this along as one reason for a racing engine, when everything under the hood looks fine.

Coincidentally, this just happened to my 75 240D. Do the clip and U joint come with a whole new replacement pedal or were you able to track down the individual parts? I haven't really had the time to look too hard at the pedal itself. I do know that the tab on the floor is pretty rusty. Thanks for your help.

Accelerator pedal tab
Apparently there is no replacement part for the metal tab, which sticks up from the floorpan. I ordered (from PerformanceProducts) an "Accelerator Pad," an "Accelerator Pad Bushing" and "Accelerator Pad Clip." The accelerator pad was not labeled on the diagram in the catalog, and the parts man didn't know what it was either. I took a chance on it being the metal pad. It wasn't the tab, but the whole accelerator pedal. The bushing links the pedal and the rod together with a flexible joint, and the pad clip links the bottom of the pad to the tab.
In my case, the aluminum tab I made will stay in the car, anchored with a stainless metal screw to the floorpan, and a small nut and bolt to the accelerator pedal (in lieu of the clip). It's not a hard jury rig, and almost anything will work. Cheers, jb ![]() |
