Leaking water pump gasket?

For a month now on warmer than average days (meaning about 0 degrees celcius) I have been leaking coolant while the car sits overnight(1982 300sd). When I come out in the morning there's a drip off of the base pan that very steady. When I look at the water pump there isn't any coolant coming out of the upper weep hole but if I look below the pump there is coolant dripping from there onto the harmonic balancer. First off is it possible for coolant to only leak from the bottom weep hole or is this most likely a gasket issue? Secondly, is it wise to use one of those form a gasket products or do they work at all? Thanks in advance Mike J.

Mine leaked like that too. I thought it was the gasket at first, but when I got the wp off, I could see the leak. It did not leak all the time, just a dribble every few days. I would use a gasket made for the application, just because it's easier than trying to manually cut out the holes for the bolt pattern,

its not the gasket, its the shaft seal, and its normal that its only leaking from the bottom weep hole.

you need a new WP, and for some reason the dealer has them for cheap.

Thumbs up

I'd just replace it, they're south of $50 with gasket.

Unfortunatlly they are 140.00 plus tax at the rip off artist here. So theres no one that disagrees with these guys when they say it's normal for only one of the weep holes to be leaking? I only ask because a friend who quite mechanically inclined who seems to think that both will leak if the bearing goes.
