can someone ....
tell me exactly what this part does
#0015455932 Yes, I know that it is an rpm sensor. I really want to know why an 83 has one and an 84 does not. but the 84 has the right socket for it, just does not have anything plugged into it. if I am going to use the instruments from an 83 will I have to plug this in also? thanks for any help. PS- to the big brothers that like to rewrite our ques..... I think you guys work to much... Last edited by whunter; 12-21-2006 at 11:27 AM. Reason: spelling |

Answer:
Search results for: 0015455932
0015455932 SIEMENS / VDO T.D.C. SENDER 74.00 This mounts on the transmission bell housing. 0015455932 VDO RPM SENSOR 74.00 This mounts by the harmonic balancer, on the front of your engine. As per my data, the 1984 300D has both of these. Last edited by whunter; 12-21-2006 at 11:41 AM. |

Tach Amp
I dont have the car infront of me right now, but I believe you are talking about the Tach Amp, the 84 Does not have one because it gets its RPM signal from the Engine/Trans adapter plated bolted to the back of the engine but infront of the bellhousing.

so,does that mean that if I use the tach from the 83 in my 84 I will have to plug in that sensor?or will what ever is the equivalent on my 84 do the same job for the 83 as it does for the 84.hope that is clear, sorry

I know exactly what you are saying, But I do not know the answer, I am in the process of figureing this out for myself,
The Tach uses 2 or 3 wires, Ground, +12V and Signal wire, you may have to run new wires from the tach amp of the 83 to the gauge cluster. This topic has been cover before, search several terms, like tach amp, 84/83 tach differance. etc, I dont have the exact thread. My 85's use the sensor at the rear of the engine, my 83's use the tach amp and harmonic balancer sensor

Tach Amp
The parts catalog is wrong.
TACH AMP ordering and price... 0015455932 TACH AMP ordering and price... The unit you are asking about is the TACH AMP, the 1983 and 1984 use the same part. ![]() |

Earlier engines use the pickup on the front of the engine - and a "tach amp" module installed in a socket such as the one you see on the driver's side - to operate the tachometer.
Later engines use a pickup installed on the bellhousing, where it "reads" the teeth of the ring gear. The signal from that pickup is handled by an electronics module located behind the panel just to the right hand side of the front passenger's feet. This has something to do with a number of things on the car, climate control system among them. Those later engines still have a pickup on the front of the engine and an associated socket, but no tach amp is installed. It's there solely for diagnostic purposes. I do not know, for the two different systems, how the signals ultimately delivered to the tachometers compare. I'd love to know, though, so tell us when you find out! If it's the case that the signals (and tachometers) are different, then I expect that you would need to modify the wiring so that the older-style tach can get its information from the older-style tach amp connected to the pickup on the front of the engine. I have some modest interest in this because I have a later-style chassis with an earlier-style engine and transmission. A number of things have been modified to get around signals and/or sensors that just aren't there. I have spent some time searching the forum on this in the past, but have never gained a thorough understanding of the differences between the two systems, i.e., exactly what signals are present at different locations in the circuitry of the two different systems. |
