Engine swap question
Will a 240d bolt up in a 123 chassic and will it bolt up to a 300 turbo transmission? The 123 chassic is a 300 turbo diesel 1985 year.

I wouldnt put an om616(2.4 litre diesel) with the 617T's transmission. The gearing isn't going to work that well with the 2.4 litre. I've never known anyone that wants to swap a smaller motor into a car that has a larger motor unless it is temporary.

I think it would, but I believe the "85"s have taller rear end gears. IMO I would look for a turbo 617 to put in. An auto 616 in that car would be sloooow,

yes actually i think the 85 is a 288. the normal gearing for a 240 is 369.
so you can put it in three and it will run and drive but the acceleration will be very very sluggish. it will be like you are pulling a trailer. but changing the rear end wouldnt be too bad. you would want to change the speedo too. maybe you can swap the four cyl for a five cyl. tom w

Actually the 82-84 is 3.07, the 85 is 2.88.

I edited my submission... after I posted it I searched to double check myself and I was wrong... the 85 is the odd ball of the 300D's

Either way, I agree that a 240D engine would be very SLOW with 300D gears.

Yeah, you are definitly want to keep the 616 with its transmission. As if it wasn't slow enough already! We did a swap like this a few years back, with a n/a 300D and a 240D motor. It was more closer of a match with the same rear end in both cars.

I believe the automatics all had the same 1-4 gear ratios, only the rear end ratio changed.
With a 2.88 rear end and 69hp, the 0-60 should be about ~26 seconds. |

Od
Didn't the '85 cars get an overdrive fourth gear?
Jay.
