New Rear Muffler
Since my rear muffler is basically falling apart (big hole in the middle, you could stomp on it and it will probably crumble) I ordered a new muffler a while back. It's a Bosal made in Czech Republic...quality seems sub-par. Welds were pretty messy but it looks like they work fine. I painted it with high temp black paint since it was bare metal and it's lookin pretty decent. Last time I checked, the old rear muffler has to be cut off, and the new one welded on, correct? It's been a while so I want to make sure it's not a bolt-in affair. How much should I expect this to cost at a muffler shop? 50 bucks? Should I just take it to one of those chains?

You can get a muffler from a Mercedes dealer for very little more than the Bosal. You won't find better quality.

This is what I did.
Cherry bomb muffler( I'm going to get flack for this) And since you have an 85 cali model you will probably like it since it flows better and it is just a tad louder.

Really. My dealer wanted 500 dollars for the rear muffler alone. I opted for the sub 100 dollar muffler instead.

I already paid for the muffler and have painted it and everything. I just want to know how much a muffler shop should charge me. I ran with the exhaust off for about 6 months and had my fun, now im ready to get back to quiet time. I barely notice a performance difference between running just the downpipe and running an exhaust with a clogged rear muffler anyways, I doubt a flowmaster will do anything except make it sound boomy.

A flowmaster can sound boomy if that's what you want. (Not me) Flowmasters are built more for performance under the hood, not sound out the rear! You can get a fairly quiet flowmaster or get a tuneable muffler if you want. The thing about flowmasters is they are made of far superior metals than anything else I've found and a 1 piece construction muffler has a throaty sound that lets you hear your engine, but you can play the radio at a moderate volume and not hear the exhaust.

My SD needed one, went out with a hacksaw and cut one off for $20. You CA guys should have tons of part yards
Paid $25 to install.
