Well, this can't be good.....
A little trip to the store and I smell antifreeze in the cab. Went away after driving. Checked under the hood when I got home and the back of the engine block is wet......but not the head. Very little water lost from the container, but I have not really looked at it in a couple of weeks.
If a head gasket goes bad on a 617, how "little" will it leak? I will still drive it and check the water and oil a couple of times day now.

Sorry for the double post, but something does not sound right with this. I will check my hose connections Sunday.
If it were an outer water section of head gasket that has gone bad, would it not be steam, sound??? I also remember that to test the head gasket, cut off a short funnel to fit into the overflow container and fill until it comes up into the funnel, then have someone start the car and look for bubbles. Anyone try this??

You sure its water at the back of the engine and not oil? these engines are known for needing the rear main seal which would account for the oil on the back of the engine were it connects to the trans..
additionally, the anti-freeze smell is probably due to a bad cap. I replaced my cap and the smell went away Hope this helps

is the oil a chocolate milk colour, is the coolant(when full) have a rainbow coloured surface? Exhaust is their white smoke at all times, does it smell sweet? etc etc

I think you have a pinhole leak in one of your hoses! It just happens to be squirting coolant onto the back of the block.

No milk, no rainbow, white smoke.......not steam, when I first start up. I always figure that to the WVO. All new cooling system...."ALL", last summer.
Too much rain today. I will check it all out Sunday, but I think I will sleep better tonight.

Whitish-gray smoke is normal when starting up. My E300 does it every day, RPM bucks around for a few seconds before settling into a calm idle. I only have five working glow plugs out of six.
I believe symptoms of a blown head gasket include increased oil consumption, exhuast smoke, and oil in the coolant. Have you ruled out the possibility of a bad valve cover gasket?

I did a valve adjustment about 4 months ago with a new gasket. I did not look to see the rear of the head by the fire wall, but the left side of the engine, turbo side, rear was wet. I will check it all out better tomorrow and post again.

Very likely one of the rear coolant hoses, as mentioned above. I have heard of this happening on more than one occasion. Matter of fact, seems like just a loose hose clamp was the culprit the last time a heard of a similar symptom.
So, sleep well tonight, enjoy the rain, and wake up tomorrow and find your leak. What a plan.........
