School Bus - Powered by Mercedes Benz

So I'm sitting at a stoplight looking cool in my 240d when I glance over at the huge yellow monster sitting next to me at the light. Judging from the music coming from under the hood, it's definitely a spark free model as it should be. I knew the local schoolsystem had recently purchased Freightliners but what I didn't know was that they are badged on the side of the engine compartment: "POWERED BY MERCEDES BENZ." I was offended and proud at the same time! (Any yes, off the line, the bus beat me)

I've read some horror stories(on this very website) about these busses-- all that glitters is not gold.

MB has been putting engines in Buses since 2001. They are great engines and are very powerful.

Our local "dash" downtown commuter busses (probably about 25ish ft long) all have a big "Powered by Mercedes-Benz" badge on the back, they are freightliners, and are brand new. I was sitting right next to one in our minivan on a very steep hill, and when the light went green, it BEAT ME off the line and this was vs a V6 gasser + my lead foot. There's some major torque coming from those engines, makes me want to be a bus driver!

I've also noticed many of the local school buses and a lot of semi's with the badging too. Very cool. I like to put my window down and listen to them idle at stop lights.

The Dodge Sprinter van and its counterpart in Freightliner are actually MB and there is a website to rebadge these vehicles grills with MB logo

I believe that many of the class 8 truck engines in frightliners are "mercedes", an engine that grew out of the Roger Penske ownership of frightliner and Detroit Diesel, and the DD Series 60 engine is the basis of that large diesel Mercedes engine.

Mercedes Benz is the world's largest commercial vehicle maker followed by HINO Japan, not surprising to see MB buses or trucks, quite common in Europe and rest of the world as a matter of fact.

mb engines in buses

you are right, they are mb engines in thomas built buses out of High Point N.C.
I am the mechanic here at a school district on Long Island, we now have 5 of these engines
Their specs are as follows
eng # om-906
6.3 litre inline 6- cyl.
190 hp can be programed up to 250 hp
525 fts. tourqe
Believe it or not, they have solid lifters and have to be adjusted at 60k.as per the manual,I have heard they do not have to be touched until 100k.
28 qt. crank case
I am not sure what they call this type of fuel delivery system,( they have not sent me for mb training yet, still under warranty) , direct injection with a electronic controlled unit injector at each cylinder with a cam shaft lobe at each injector which I think develops the high pressure
no glow plugs but it has and intake heater that comes on when needed
I hope this answers any curiosty that anybody has about thi school buses
