Started and then click. click

I started the 85 D this morning after I replaced the secondary (spin-on) fuel filter last night. It started fine as it normally does every morning (car is inside a heated garage).

It ran for about 5 seconds and stopped. I turned the ingnition again but this time it just clicked - starter did not turn. Tried a few more times and same thing.

I realized I forgot to prime the new filter last night so I opened hood and primed it (Although I don't see the connection of not starting with the priming). Tried starting again but same thing.

The battery has to be ok since it started the first time around. I had to go to work so I left it alone for the time being and switch to the 84 D.

Any ideas???

Click click

Happened to me too when I worked on something completely unrelated (cruise control amp in my case).

Turned out to be as simple as a loose cable clamp on one of the battery cables - just had chosen that moment to loosen up. Of course I thought it was something I'd done under the dash and it took a long time before I thought of checking the obvious....

Ok, although I checked the battery terminals right away, I'll check it again.

Is there some type of sensor in the fuel system like maybe in the IP that keeps the car from starting if it does not sense fuel? Seems kinda elaborate for this car but just wondering. Its just so unusual that this occurs right after I changed the filter and and forgot to prime the system.

I hear all the relays clicking as I turn the Ignition sw. It seems a relay is not kicking in to turn the starter. Also, no fuse is blown.

Take a finish hammer and give the starter a whack or two. A finish hammer is a small hammer.

Don't feel too bad. I did that one night after I had all my bags packed to go to Nashville. I had put my them all in my car, got ready to leave and nothing happened. I even ended up asking my mechanic over the phone what he thought. But after about an hour and a half I discovered that my shifter was between park and reverse.
